Hypercoagulability and hypofibrinolysis and risk of deep vein thrombosis and splanchnic vein thrombosis: similarities and differences.
In this review, we provide an overview of the risk factors for venous thromboembolism, focusing on hypercoagulability and hypofibrinolysis. In the first part of this review, we discuss the risk factors for commonly occurring venous thrombosis, in particular deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In the second part, we provide an overview of the risk factors for the Budd-Chiari syndrome an...
متن کاملFatal coronary sinus thrombosis due to hypercoagulability in Crohn's disease.
A 27-year-old male, admitted to hospital for a psoas muscle abscess secondary to Crohn's disease, suddenly died while in hospital. A medicolegal autopsy showed coronary sinus thrombosis. Coronary sinus thrombosis is rare and is usually associated with invasive cardiac procedures. Coronary sinus thrombosis associated with Crohn's disease has not been reported. Autopsy examination of the coronary...
متن کاملSecretion of von Willebrand factor by endothelial cells links sodium to hypercoagulability and thrombosis.
Hypercoagulability increases risk of thrombi that cause cardiovascular events. Here we identify plasma sodium concentration as a factor that modulates blood coagulability by affecting the production of von Willebrand factor (vWF), a key initiator of the clotting cascade. We find that elevation of salt over a range from the lower end of what is normal in blood to the level of severe hypernatremi...
متن کاملThrombophilia and hypercoagulability.
This is a review of less well-known aspects of thrombophilia and hypercoagulability as they relate to thrombosis. Thrombosis is an abnormal fibrin clot that develops in circulating blood with clinical symptoms of one or more arterial and/or venous obstructions exclusively identified by imaging techniques. The terms thrombophilia and hypercoagulability are often used indiscriminately when they a...
متن کاملAortic Atherosclerosis, Hypercoagulability, and Stroke
Methods We performed transesophageal echocardiography in 255 patients with first acute ischemic stroke and in 209 control subjects matched by age, gender, and race/ethnicity. The association between arch plaques and hypercoagulability, and its effect on the stroke risk, was assessed with a case-control design. Stroke patients were then followed prospectively to assess recurrent stroke and death.
